35 YEARS OF LIVING WITH PAIN
My personal journey with pain began as a child with spina-bifida. The first 20 years of my life involved in excess of 40 surgical operations and hundreds of other procedures where I had to endure acute pain. There were also many years during my adolesence when I had to live with chronic pain.
Liberation from Chronic Pain
During this time I found a way to liberate myself from intense chronic back pain which began at age 13. I spent 2 years as a morphine addict living in severe chronic pain. I tried every medical and alternative therapy available to relieve the pain, including psychotherapy, acupuncture, hypnosis, the best specialist medical surgeons in the world, faith healers, psychic healers. Nothing worked. Through my own discoveries and mind training techniques I learnt how to live a happy and contented life in freedom with pain.
Since that time I’ve spent 35 years living with acute and chronic pain and applied the insights and discoveries that I learnt, to my own life.
Climbing with Pain
One example of how I have applied the freedom with pain philosophy to my own life has been to climb numerous 10,000 foot plus mountains in Europe, and Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand 3 times. I love to walk, and enjoy long distance tramps. Exploring the wilderness and outdoors of our wonderful country in New Zealand is a passion that has not been limited by my spina-bifida condition or pain. Each mountain I would climb, or each tramp that I would undertake, and every long distance outdoor expedition I would undergo, would involve significant pain in my back and legs. My personal pain practice was to learn to bring gentleness, alertness and an inner smile to each step I would take, in pain. My love of climbing, and our beautiful outdoors, has never been restricted by my medical condition or my own pain. Rather my desire for a full, rewarding and rich life has been the focus rather than the pain I would undergo during these adventures.
Through this website, and live pain coaching, I offer you the opportunity to share my insights, discoveries and “way of life”, and to apply them to your own.
